ISU-152 – base colour

Hi folks!

I’ve been assembling a ISU-152 (1/35) recently and this is the result of the base coat (colour).

This is my first model from Zvezda. Like all their kits, it was really affordable. But it is also quite basic, lacking details, with a very underwhelming set of decals, flashing on almost every part etc.

Ah! And with horrible vinyl tracks too.

I had little pleasure putting it together (sanding Fest!) but to be honest once done, it’s a nice model to look at and I think I will have some fun painting and weathering this beast.

I used Tamiya J.A. Green as a base color, with a mix of Yellow Green, J.A. Green and Buff for the highlights. My choice of colours was influenced by some posts on the blog of an amazing modeller named Vladimir Adamec (take a look at his work!).

Since I don’t want to spend anymore money on such a poor kit, I will keep the vinyl tracks. I plan to create some sag with the use of metal pins (like I did on my KV-2 model) and hide the imperfections with mud. Lots of mud.

Enjoy the pics!

ZOMBICIDE!!!

I started playing Zombicide with friends about a year ago. It’s a really fun coop “board game”, with superb zombie miniatures. The temptation to paint them was too great (they’re zombie after all!), so here are the pics!

They are all painted “table top quality” level, with my standard routine:

  1. primer (Army Painter Necrotic Flesh) – here, the primer will also be the base flesh tone.
  2. various acrylic colours to simply block areas, no shading at all…
  3. a wash (Army Painter QuickShade Dark Tone).
  4. a matt varnish (Testor DullCote).
  5. When dried, I paint the small details (eyes, teeth, blood) and the base.

Voilà! They look very nice on the gaming board!

Runners! I painted all runner bases with a yellow stripes pattern: They are super easy to spot during the game!

It’s been a while since I posted anything on this blog, but fear not: I’m back! And with a big smile too, because my &*#@$ Brummbar is finally done! I had so much trouble with the painting of this bad boy… But now it is time to relax, and enjoy the pics!

There be Goblins!

I didn’t find the time (and courage) to work on my various projects recently…

…but with the return of summer I will have more drive to get back to work.

Starting with my Moria Goblins by Game’s Workshop. Nothing fancy, they are tabletop quality: base colours followed a dipping, like my Mantic orcs.

I had some fun with the details on the bases (vegetation, plants, leaves, grass, etc).

They’ll look great on the game table: cool!

Brummbar – chipping update…

Posted by yansick on April 12, 2015
Posted in: Scale model. Tagged: Military, Models, Scale model, Tanks. Leave a comment

Here is the progress on the chipping of my 1/35 Brummbar.

Simple technique: a small piece of sponge is dipped in dark acrylic paint and (painstakingly) used to create small dents and scratches on all the edges of the armour. Then, with a fine brush, I paint some highlights around many paint chips to simulate paint that was scratched and revealed a slightly lighter color than the area were the paint is completely “missing”.

Tedious process. But really worthwhile.

For the records, I am using Vallejo Model Color 150 German C. Black Brown for the darker color, with a 50/50 mix of Vallejo Model Color 116 Dark Yellow and Tamiya Buff (XF-57) for the lighter color (scratches and chip edges). I am planning to use a bit of Tamiya Hull Red (XF-9) to break the uniform dark color of the largest paint chips.

Contrasts are a bit too harsh for now, but I’ll do a wash, add some rust stains, drips and streaks, then a final “dusting” with pigments. This should all help to make color transitions more subtle and natural in the end… hopefully.

Chipping is in progress on the pics: most of the top, front panels and main gun is 90% done. The rest of the tank is 50% chipped.

I am going for the heavy weathering again. Is it realistic for a vehicle to look so beaten up after 2-3 years of service, even in times of War? Not sure. Let’s say it is “artistic interpretation”…

Brummbar – update 1

Posted by yansick on April 4, 2015
Posted in: Scale model. Tagged: Military, Scale model, Tanks. Leave a comment

I worked a bit on my Brummbar. To be honest, I’m a bit disappointed. First, the kit is old (lacking details). And I had problems with the first coat of primer, which resulted in a grainy rough finish: I should have stripped the paint and sanded the model to repaint it to a smoother finish, but I wanted to be done with this kit and so I repainted over the old paint directly…

Then, I had some more problems with the decals (they were old and brittle and started breaking when I applied them…). I had to make use of scratches and weathering to mask the poor quality of application.

As if it wasn’t enough, the (cheap) oil paint I used to make my first wash had coarse pigments in it… and I forgot to put a semi-gloss varnish prior to washing… So the surface was too textured and matte, and pigments gripped to it like crazy. I had a hard time creating gradual shadows around things and I had to correct a lot of dirty pooling messes everywhere. Argghhhh!

I used Tamiya Hull Red color for the scratches, but I am not pleased with that either. I should have used Raw Umber (very dark brown) instead, as the reddish tinge of the Hull Red is too strong a contrast for the yellow of the Dunkelgelb in my opinion. But that will probably be corrected with subsequent weathering (dusting, rust, mud etc…)

Overall, it is still an interesting looking beast. Not precise, easy or quick, but cool.

It is also my first real attempt at a vehicle painted mostly in Dunkelgelb.

The pics show the model with part of the chipping done. Still a lot of (not so much fun) work to do…

Anyhow: Enjoy the pics!

I used the Hairspray technique to make chipping paint on the rusty exhaust. Not 100% done (still too clean) but nice looking.

Just a quick update: base-coat and pre-shading done on my IS-3. I will add more color modulation and highlights, but it is starting to look like something.

Brummbar?

Posted by yansick on March 30, 2015

While I was pre-shading and basecoating my IS-3 tank this weekend (a post coming about that soon), I decided to pre-shade and basecoat an old model I had lying around: a Sturmpanzer IV “Brummbar” from Tamiya (a model almost 30 years old!).

Of course models made in the 80’s had fewer details than those made today. I could spend countless hours trying to improve my Brummbar and make it close to today’s standards (I was tempted to do so for a while, of course…). But in the end, I just decided to keep it like that, “out-of-the-box assembly” and concentrate on the paint job, weathering, and diorama.

I’m not a big fan of the camo pattern I used, but it seems appropriate for the time and location (Italy!).

I’m planning to use some foliage and branches to hide the most annoying details.

I’m pleased with the result so far.

Grey primer, followed by pre-shading with black, then a basecoat of Tamiya "Dark Yellow" (Dunkelgelb). Then, some highlights of a paler shade of Dunkelgelb.

IS-3 details done! Here’s the primer now!

Done with the details. It’s down to that weird mixed feeling of accomplishment and resignation (I guess modellers are never satisfied).

I had a hard time creating the details of the hoses on top of the external fuel tanks. The wire I was using was a bit too “springy” and I was difficult to bend it into shape. I’m not 100% ok with the final result, but… close enough…

A cool step at this stage is applying the primer. I like that nice uniform colouring, blending together plastic, photo-etched details, putty and all.

Enjoy the pics!

Crystal terrain!

Posted by yansick on March 26, 2015

A quick project for the gaming table: desert rocks with crystal formations.

I glued pieces of gardening cedar bark to small masonite bases with the glue gun. With the same hot glue, I placed plastic “gems” bought at the dollar store. For painting, it was easy: a basecoat of rusty brown, dry brush of ochre on the sand and dry brush of sand beige on the rocks and sand for the highlights. I also built an altar from a larger piece of bark, to which I added some of my homemade resin skulls.

Easy, and a cool addition to my terrain pieces.

Yeah!
